Cook/kitchen team member

Job description: Cook / Prep Cook / Savory-Baking

This is not your average kitchen job.

Imagine working in a beautiful, creative, from-scratch kitchen, learning alongside one of the region’s most talented and respected chefs, creating food for some of St. Louis’ most memorable events — and still having a life outside of work.

Sundays and Mondays off. Most nights free. No late-night restaurant grind.

At The Social Affair at The Dogwood, we believe extraordinary experiences begin in the kitchen. We are known for thoughtful, from-scratch cooking, beautiful presentation, exceptional ingredients, and menus built around the best seasonal and locally sourced products we can find.

We create everything from intimate chef-driven dinners and elegant weddings to large-scale celebrations, interactive culinary stations, and events at some of St. Louis’ most beautiful venues.

And we are looking for the right Cook / Culinary Team Member to join us.

If you genuinely love food, want to keep learning, and get excited about making people happy through something you created with your hands, this could be an incredible kitchen to call home.

Why This Job Is Different

This is an opportunity to learn, cook, create, and grow under the direction of one of the region’s most accomplished culinary talents.

You won’t spend every night standing on a restaurant line cooking the same menu over and over again.

Our menus change. Our events change. Our ingredients change with the seasons.

One week you may be preparing an elegant plated dinner. The next, an abundant Mediterranean-inspired station, handmade pasta, locally sourced vegetables, beautiful hors d'oeuvres, or a completely custom menu designed for a wedding or private dinner.

You will learn technique, organization, presentation, event execution, and what it takes to produce extraordinary food at a high level.

And perhaps the biggest hospitality perk of all:

We are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Our kitchen is primarily daytime production and prep, with Friday and Saturday evening events as scheduled. Most evenings are yours.

Great food. Great people. A creative kitchen. And a schedule that actually allows you to have a life.

What You’ll Do

As part of our culinary team, you will:

  • Prepare and produce food in a true from-scratch kitchen

  • Work with high-quality, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients

  • Execute recipes and prep lists developed by our culinary leadership team

  • Learn and refine professional cooking techniques

  • Assist with event preparation, plating, finishing and culinary station execution

  • Help produce beautiful food for weddings, corporate dinners, private events and special culinary experiences

  • Maintain exceptional standards for quality, consistency and presentation

  • Keep a clean, organized and efficient workstation

  • Follow food safety and sanitation standards

  • Work collaboratively with our culinary and event teams

  • Take ownership of your work and contribute wherever the team needs you

Pastry & Baking

Pastry or baking experience is a big plus.

If you love breads, desserts, pastry, baking or working with dough, tell us. We would love to find someone who can bring those talents to the team — or someone eager to develop them.

Who Will Thrive Here

We are looking for someone who:

  • Really loves food

  • Takes pride in doing things the right way

  • Wants to learn from talented chefs and continue growing

  • Appreciates great ingredients and beautiful presentation

  • Is dependable, positive and ready to work

  • Understands how important organization and attention to detail are in a professional kitchen

  • Is a true team player and willing to jump in wherever needed

  • Can work daytime prep shifts and scheduled evening events

  • Is available for Friday and Saturday events when needed

  • Can stand and work on their feet for extended periods

  • Cares about the person who will eventually eat the food they are preparing

Experience is important.

Attitude, curiosity, work ethic and a genuine love of cooking matter just as much.

The Schedule

We know kitchen life can be demanding, which is why our schedule is one of the things that makes this position special.

Sundays: OFF
Mondays: OFF
Most evenings: FREE

Our kitchen primarily operates during daytime prep and production hours, with evening shifts for scheduled events — most commonly on Fridays and Saturdays.

You get to build a career in food without giving up every night of your life to do it.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience

  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance

  • Simple IRA

  • Paid vacation / PTO

  • Sundays and Mondays off

  • Most evenings free

  • Family meals

  • A positive, creative and collaborative kitchen environment

  • The opportunity to work directly with and learn from an exceptional culinary team

  • Exposure to high-end weddings, private dinners, corporate events and one-of-a-kind culinary experiences

  • The opportunity to cook at some of the most beautiful venues in St. Louis

  • A workplace where creativity is encouraged and great food is genuinely valued

  • Opportunities to learn, grow and take on more responsibility as your skills develop

  • Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Our Culture

At The Social Affair, food is our love language.

We believe extraordinary food comes from people who genuinely care — about the ingredients, about the details, about one another and about the guest who will eventually experience what we create.

We work hard. We laugh. We learn from each other. We jump in when someone needs help. We take enormous pride in what leaves our kitchen.

There are easier ways to make food.

We aren't interested in those.

We believe in making things from scratch, sourcing thoughtfully, treating ingredients with respect, presenting food beautifully and creating experiences people remember.

If that sounds like the kind of kitchen you’ve been looking for, we would really love to meet you.
